Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the Founder of the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC), is a saint of great legacy from Kainakary, a Kuttanadan village of Kerala. His spirituality was a rare combination of immense social and spiritual commitment.St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1805–1871) was a great saint, social reformer, educator, and the founder of the Carmelite of Mary Immaculate (CMI),and the congregation of the mother of Carmel ( CMC) the first indigenous religious congregation for men in India. He is widely remembered for his deep faith, visionary leadership, and lifelong commitment to education and social upliftment.St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara was born on 10 February 1805 at Kainakary, Kerala. From a young age, he showed a strong inclination toward spirituality, learning, and service to society. He was ordained as a priest in 1829 and later became a key figure in reforming the Church and society in Kerala.One of his greatest contributions was in the field of education. He strongly believed that education was essential for personal growth and social transformation. He initiated the concept of schools attached to churches, making education accessible to children from all sections of society, irrespective of caste or economic background. His famous instruction, “A school along with every church,” laid the foundation for modern educational development in Kerala.St. Kuriakose also worked tirelessly for social equality, women’s education, moral values, and faith formation. He started printing presses, promoted family prayer, and encouraged the study of languages and sciences.In recognition of his holy life and outstanding service, he was canonized as a saint on 23 November 2014 by Pope Francis. Today, institutions named after St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara continue to uphold his vision by promoting knowledge, discipline, faith, and service to humanity.St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara remains an enduring inspiration for students, teachers, and society .
